THE LEGEND OF PODKIN ONE-EAR

Caleb’s review of: THE LEGEND OF PODKIN ONE-EAR
Author: Kieran Larwood
Genre: Fiction

An amazing book about a rabbit who has had his parents taken away. He is running away from iron covered rabbits called Gorm seeking for 12 gifts from the goddesses. PODKIN has his tribes. I haven’t been able to put this book down since I got it, I can’t wait to read the next book. Would this class like to read it?

Times tables

17 01 2018

I got the DK times tables app called times tables. It is free, and I really like it. It’s easy to use , you can choose which time table to be tested on or a variety. There are two cars one is  always going and the other car is yours, as you get answers right your car moves.

Super cyclocross national championships by will

17 01 2018

This weekend I have seen people get very very muddy at the The national cyclocross championships which were held at Hetton Lyons Country Park in Sunderlan . There were all the best riders in the country there. We went to see the Saturday action including cheering a Stockton wheeler on in the under 14 boys.

There was a flyover made from scaffolding that the riders had to ride up and over, they also had to carry the bikes up hills and over hurdles and through lots of mud.

Tom Pidcock from Otley won the under 23s.  The race was good because it was fun, he won by a long way.

I bought a new bobble hat with rainbows on just like the winners of every race for the nationals get a red blue and white striped jersey to wear for 2018to say they are national champ.

A poem about the Iron Man

12 01 2018

We looked at the next bit of our story today.  In our version of the book, the illustrator used paper for a collage to represent the broken Iron Man lying scattered on the beach. This inspired us to produce a poem about him breaking up as he tumbled down the cliff. We looked at how the author used capitals to emphasise the sound effects.  We went a step further to explore how we could alter our handwriting to make words look like they were tumbling and falling.  This lead to a great discussion about how the author can have greater impact upon a reader.  We noticed that we read the text differently after this was discussed – our voices changed a lot more in pitch and volume.

We were challenged to plan out our writing into sections and think about different shapes we could write on to represent the Iron Man’s body.  We were given metallic papers to write on and special pens, including silver and gold.  This added an extra challenge because we couldn’t use a rubber and our handwriting had to be EXTREMELY neat.  We demonstrated excellent concentration and resilience!   We had to create all the body parts to fit around how we presented our writing which was tricky – trying to cut shapes big enough to fit in our writing.  Mrs Stanley didn’t provide any templates. It all had to be our own work!

The pictures don’t do the work justice because the shiny paper was hard to photograph but here’s a taste.  They can be seen up on our working wall in the classroom.

This book is number 6 in the Flying Fergus series. So it’s all about qualifying and the training to ride at the Manchester velodrome.
They go training in the highlands and stay at Mary’s who is a journalist who worked with Jambo, who is Fergus’ step dad in this book.
I like this book because adore bikes and cycling.  I feel like I’m in the book because Chris Hoy writes it and he knows a lot about bikes and cycling because he’s got six gold Olympic medals.
I am looking forward to book 7 The wreck it race.
